Walk to Kenya
Published: August 21, 2007

Want to find an interesting way to participate in raising funds for Mully Children's Family and becoming physically fit? Here it is!

Kenya is 13,000km away (from Toronto), why don't we walk it all together? The goal of this project is to walk those 13,000km (8,000mi) using the collective efforts of as many people as possible! Every inch must be covered on foot (treadmills acceptable). The chart below will be updated at the beginning of every month, after we have the numbers from the previous month.

To join: Sign up on this website and and enter WALK TO KENYA in the Biography section. If you're already a member on the site, please email us at info@spokeimpact.com and let us know that you'd like to join in this effort.

For more information, scroll down below the chart detailing those already involved and walking.

WALK TO KENYA - 13000 KM./8000 mi.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The goal of WALK TO KENYA is to walk the 13000 km./8000mi using the collective efforts of as many people as would like to join this band of merry travelers. Although we will not actually go anywhere, every inch must be covered on foot (treadmills acceptable). Since the whole idea is to improve your health while supporting street children in Kenya, every mi/km. must be accompanied by an any- amount pledge per mi/km.

HOW CAN I JOIN UP?

This is the easy part. You go to www.spokeimpact.com and sign up (under the picture of the dog where it says more>>). You have to fill out the usual stuff but at the bottom where it says Biography Information be sure to mention WALK TO KENYA. That way we will be able to keep track of your part of the walk and how far we still have to go.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT THIS IS LEGIT, YOU KNOW, NOT SOME KIND OF CYBER FRAUD?

Well for one thing all the donations and tax receipts are handled by Crossroads Christian Communication. Check them out at crossroads.ca. It all goes through Spokeimpact (above) because that's where all the statistics are kept and where you can keep track of what's going on, with your efforts and with the bigger picture.

O.K., SO ASSUMING EVERTHING IS IN GOOD HANDS, WHY KENYA?

Nobody knows African problems like the Africans, and there, like everywhere else, are very few people that can and are willing to do something about them. One such man is Charles Mulli of Kenya. Abused and abandoned to the streets at the age of six, he rose up to become a millionaire, only to give it all up and return to the streets, but this time to rescue children whose fate he knew only too well. His story is well told in a book called Father To The Fatherless by Paul H. Boge (www.castlequaybooks.com). He and his wife have established a home for street children that could be a model for Africa.

THERE'S GOT TO BE A CATCH, WHAT ARE YOU REALLY UP TO?

You're right, you got me this time, here's the catch. All that walking you are going to do for a cause thousands of miles away? Well eventually it's going to make you feel better, look better, and will actually make you a lot more healthy. Here is another trick, don't eat so much, and the money you save will pay for the pledge you make for each mi/km you walk. So it turns out you get things of real value and all for free. Looks like I really fooled you this time.

OK, CAN WE GET SERIOUS NOW?

Seriously, if you would like to join this group of travelers who you may never meet, but who are walking for others just like you, then sign on with spokeimpact and indicate you are interested in Walk To Kenya. That way Arvid and anyone interested will be able to keep track of your contribution to the many miles/km we will have to walk to achieve our objective. Anyone can join, and I for one will be very happy to have you along.

Your friend in walking and caring,

David (Moe) Pontin
